Facing Change

AP Drawing Portfolio, 2020

In this portfolio, I captured the experiences of growing up with a series of portraits of young people. I wanted to depict the emotions of each subject in respect to being young. The progression begins with babies and small children, who are so busy growing that they don't even realize they are doing so; piece 1 of my selected works depicts a newborn with its eyes closed, reflecting this lack of awareness. But as children get older and begin to understand the future, they look outward with awe and wonder. Teenagers view the future with more complexity; some look forward with optimism and pride and others with distrust, disillusionment, and anxiety.

My portfolio contains many practice illustrations in which I sought to learn the basics of value and color in respect to facial anatomy and skin coloration. With that practice, I was able to create works with more nuanced meaning and try media I was unfamiliar with. I later revised works using what I had learned with more experimental pieces. My compositions are fairly simple because I wanted the focus of the pieces to be on the subjects’ faces and their expression.
